Many people throughout the country do what is known as “spring cleaning“.   I live in the Southwestern desert and what we do here is “fall cleaning”.  I tend to think that these times of clearing out the old and rearranging one’s living space comes during times when the weather is just about to become a little more livable, which for some it is the springtime following a harsh winter, and for others it is the fall months, after surviving a long and hot summer.  One of the things about these times, is that with Next Day Blinds, problems about the severe temperatures go out the window so to speak.  Meaning, that many of the styles are insulated, keeping out the harsher temperatures, and making certain that your home stays either toasty warm, or alternately nice and cool.

Another aspect of this time, is that when one is cleaning out one’s living space, they may find the inspiration to redecorate and update.  To freshen their space as they too themselves feel a sense of freshness and renewal.  There are many inexpensive ways to update one’s house, and ways that are simple and involve only the minimal amount of time and effort.  Updating the window treatments for example, is easy with the help of the salespeople at Next Day Blinds.  Old and heavy drapes are replaced with fashionable blinds, and old, tattered blinds can be replaced with efficient and handsome shades.

Spring and autumn seasons are beautiful seasons, and during this time many people spend a lot of time daydreaming and looking out the windows.  Having your windows framed in a way that too is pleasing to the eye will have a great effect, not only on what you are seeing but how you are feeling.  Whether you are looking at the new buds on all of the trees, or watching the leaves turn colors, your windows are the eyes of your house, and give you the chance to view the world from the safety of your own home.  Great window treatments make a difference in this view, and when your cleaning is finished you will find time to relax and take comfort in that view.

There’s something about fire and storytelling.  Perhaps it’s something primal, stretching back into the shadows of pre-history, literally tens of thousands of years, when hunter/gatherer societies met around a fire at the end of the day, successfully having hunted, successfully having gathered, and unfold the story of what happened to them over the last few hours.  It was around the fire that myths and legends developed, it was how stories found form and content, practiced again and again.  In the days before writing, arriving at the fire meant we were not only going to receive food and warmth, but we were going to learn about each other and the strange world around us.  What a different time it must have been then.  No medicine, no science, no explanation for the millions of visible lights in the night sky, nor the large white-gray sphere that arced through that night, waxing and waning, nor the bright ball of fire, seemingly smaller than the other sphere, but clearly fiercer, hotter, stronger.  It’s little wonder that one of the first sciences to develop was a mix of astronomy and astrology.  Everything we learned brought back to the wood fireplaces and shared with others.

You can see the remnants of this connection between fires and stories today, in a number of different places:   In Yosemite National Park, people meet for an evening of telling stories by the fireside inside The Ahwahnee Great Lounge, at a magnificent fireplace.  Meant for young and old alike, people tell stories about the people of Yosemite,  its places and history.  There’s a group in Ireland with a group that references telling stories around the fire, and many, many other groups.  Even in these times, you’ll still find mention of the fire associated with the storyteller.  I noted one article on the world wide web titled, “Spinning Yarns Around the Digital Fire.”  This pairing between flames and stories seems inextricable now, it’s so ingrained in our world.  Now that I’ve called your attention to it, you’ll probably start to see it, too; certainly, we’ll all think about it the next time we’re standing around a fireplace.

There isn’t much that is more quaint in the night time air than the patio fireplace.  It is so much fun to round up a group of friends and family and sit outside by the fire catching up. Pull out the marshmallows and make smores with the cozy heat. It is a great way to catch up with the kids and hopefully get them to share what is going on in their lives with you. Or how about sitting out with your main love and talk about your future together. Toss around the dreams that you share and figure out how to make them happen. They say that the best business goes down on the golf course. I say the best family awareness happens by the patio fireplace.

There are so many to choose from these days. What does your patio look like?  Is it filled with lush green grass, rolling hills and tall pine trees? How about a lucky spot along the boardwalk of the beach with the white sand and the people rolling by on their bikes?  Maybe you live in a desert with rocks and cactus through out your yard.  How about the swampy, humidity of the south east of the U.S.  You could find a patio fireplace to fit your style and dry your socks. No matter where you live there is always a great fireplace for your patio.

There is the coated steel, usually in black. There are styles with a natural white stone look to them. They can be found enclosed with little iron doors or open faced with the flames flaring up in the center. Some of the patio fireplaces look like they were taken right out of your living room as a permanent fixture to your yard. Many of them can be moved to anywhere you want to land like maybe a hot tub. Modern or antique like, or the ever popular in the south west the Terra Cotta burners. Lately I have seen some great versions of a table top fireplace. All guaranteed to be a pleasing place to spend some relaxation time.

Personal spas are very popular in this part of the world, and have actually been popular in nearly every part of the world, in some shape or form.  For centuries, people have been reaping the benefits of soaking in hot water for periods of time.  In some cultures, it’s a very elaborate ritual, and in others, it’s simply a fun thing to do.  You’ll enjoy your hottub, whether it’s for social gatherings or for the personal health benefits, and it will bring smiles to the faces of those closest to you.  Hottubs have a way of bringing people together, and it’s a certain primal pleasure to soak together.

The combination of heat, massage from the jets, and buoyancy on the cells in the body, is a spectacular combination, and it relieves stress almost instantly, but works deeper on the body the longer you stay in it.  One of the more wonderful things about the tub, is that you will start to react to the heat more quickly, and the relaxation can get deeper, and even more pleasant.   The body likes to be in water that’s hotter than itself.  It’s interesting when you consider that we’re more comfortable being in water that’s either a little cooler than 98.6 degrees for swimming, and a little hotter for relaxing.

The body likes water, period.  Some schools of healing suggest that drinking water at warmer temperatures is good for the health.  Drinking hot water has the effect of cooling the body, oddly enough.  It’s the same idea as eating hot peppers in warm climates, to make the body sweat to meet the temperature outside, and making it cooler.  There are some who will argue that it doesn’t really matter if the drinking water is hot or cold, because it will rehydrate either way.  These things are worth looking into, or at least daydreaming about, while you’re relaxing in your new hottub.

I suppose it is not surprising why so many homes are now installing hot tubs and spas. Seems like I am hearing about more and more friends, relatives and family putting in hot tubs and spas; taking advantage of the relaxing and wrathful benefits of their use.

Hydrotherapy has many beneficial effect on the body and mind. The hot water in and of its self is very relaxing, it increases your bloods circulation that alone has many benefits. The hot water also helps loosen stiff and tense muscles releasing stress and abating pain caused by the tension. The deep relaxation that can be achieved assists in relieving insomnia, many people report falling a sleep faster and longer after soaking in a hot tub or spa before going to bed. The awake more rested and ready for their day.

Hot tubs and spas are now available in so many styles, sizes and types that just about any situation or budget could be accommodated for installation. If you have limited space and do not have the appropriate electrically and plumbing hook ups and not wanting to do so there are portable styles of tubs and spas. Not only are these units easy to set up they are self contained with a filtering system and heater like a conventional hot tub, with the advantage of portability. If permanent installation is not a problem for you and where you live the varieties are endless. From 1 and 2 person tubs up to 10 and 12 person tubs. They are made in a variety of styles to accommodate various tastes and styles. Spas and hot tubs can be added to existing landscapes and easily incorporated to make a look as if they have been there for a long time.

With the flexibility of permanent installation or portable and the variety of sizes available the popularity of home hot tubs and spas will only increase.

Surrounding each restaurant, coffee shop and hotel, Melbourne Australia has vast expanses of greenery, the parks and the streets are filled with flowers.  The gardens throughout the city are well manicured and offer an array of colorful displays, amongst the public sculptures, the gazebos and the fountains.  Many of the gardens are located close to the center of town, within walking or biking distance, and what is even more wonderful, the botanical gardens in the city are free to the public.  Many include, along with the more than twelve thousands species of plant and flower life, wildlife and bird sanctuaries.  One is able to tour all of the gardens, at a leisurely pace, in the course of one afternoon.

Melbourne is a happening and funky city, but once in a while, it is good to just get out and enjoy nature, the beauty and the serenity.  There is an observatory, rain-forest walks, an herbarium and lakes.  And throughout the summers, the Moonlight Cinema is an incredible way to watch movies, series of cult movies and the classics run through the season, and many bring picnics and bottles of wine and relax under the stars watching the famous movies of our times.

One can find information and maps for all of the gardens at the tourist center just next to the Shrine of Remembrance.  There are guided tours available as well.  All of the gardens are valued for their significance to the city, be it horticultural, historical or aesthetic.  They were placed in the Register of Victorian Heritage in 1999 and derived their names from the governor of the region, Charles Augustus Fitzroy.  James Cook was the early explorer who charted the coast of Australia, and his cottage from Yorkshire was transported to one of the gardens as a gift.  He was born in this cottage, and it remains with the furnishings of his time.  There is a green house that switches out colorful floral displays five times throughout the year, and and abundance of sculpture, included that which is carved as a bas relief of sorts in the Fairy Tree.  Beautiful, beautiful escapes located within the city limits, perfect for a time away for any traveler or resident.

Insomnia is one of the characteristics of those suffering from Fibromyalgia.  This diseases causes those to fidget all night in the attempt to find comfort, but what generally happens that even when one does find it, it is not good sleep..it is disturbed and interrupted throughout the night.  Rarely will one wake feeling rested and rejuvenated.  It seems that something in the brain of those afflicted is triggered when one sleeps, and arousal of pain that is automatic and symptomatic of the disease.  When this occurs over time, the patient will not reap the restorative benefits that sleep is meant to provide.

While one sleeps, the hormone necessary for growth, not just in growing children but that which is necessary for the growth of new cells throughout the body, is produced.  Without this surge each night of the hormone, neurotransmitters in the brain remain un-replenished, and the muscles will not be able to heal.  This lack of sleep eventually just compounds the problems already inherent in the disease.  The body becomes even more sensitive to stress and to the pain.  Anxiety levels soar, as well as depression, difficulty with memory and overall fatigue.

Some people experience insomnia as have trouble just falling asleep, while others have a difficult time remaining asleep.  Others will sleep through the night, but will wake up far too early.  Changes in ones lifestyle is often the most beneficial and long lasting ways one can finally get a good night of rest.   Comfort one creates in ones home will do wonders as far as reducing stress levels and falling to sleep.  One very successful way people relax is by either soaking in a hot bath tub or by soaking in a hot tub surrounding by a beautiful garden in their own back yard.  Such hot tubs are inexpensive today such as those displayed at choosehottubsdirect.com.  Hot water calms the mind and relaxes the body.  Other ways that people relax and quiet their minds is through meditation, avoiding caffeine and sugar, calming music or doing a bit of yoga or stretching before climbing into bed.

When building the perfect outdoor kitchen, selecting the outdoor kitchen appliances that are right for you can be as much fun as dreaming about your next meal.  There are so many options, and putting the pieces together in your imagination is exciting, but nothing compared to the way it will feel when you’re walking around in it.  There are side grills, grills with searing options, storage possibilities, outdoor lighting, and pizza ovens that will open up new possibilities for culinary adventures.

There is a versatility in grilling that most people might not suspect, until they start learning about the grill.  It’s not accidental that this primal way of cooking food has stuck around for so long, and keeps evolving to the excellent outdoor kitchens that are available today.  So something as seemingly simple as grilled zucchini becomes loaded with possibilities when the possibilities on the grill are expanded.  For beginners, though, it’s important to know a couple of basic things.

First, zucchini, like many vegetables, are composed primarily of water.  The same principles, then, for cooking meat, apply here.  Punctures and cuts in the food can let out all the flavor.  With zucchini, this is more true than perhaps for any other food, where its structure makes it very easy for the water to be released in the cooking process, which can make for a rather dry and flavorless vegetable.  However, with some knowledge about cutting, and sealing the vegetable with butter or oil, the natural flavors, and any other seasonings that you might add, can be locked in to make an exceptional dish.  The other thing to remember for grilling zucchini is, like with other foods, to only turn it once.  This gives those beautiful grill marks, and also insures a capture of flavor.  The right outdoor appliances can really give the right touch, to make for perfect meals every time.

In the hectic, work driven world of today, many find that they are suffering ailments that are related to that…to too much work and not enough time spent relaxing and caring for oneself.  Many rush home only to have those requirements such as walking the dog, helping the kids with homework, cooking dinner, making school lunches and then falling into to bed, only to have trouble falling asleep.  Then the next day, the stresses are only compounded as one feels the effects of not having a good night of sleep.  One of the aspects of hydrotherapy may be able to solve this problem, among many other physical problems adults experience due to their lifestyles.  Insomnia, anxiety and chronic fatigue syndrome are just some of the physical ailments than can be treated with hydrotherapy.  Many people still have the idea that owning a spa is an expense that they can not afford, however with modern technological advances and new designs, the home spa is relatively inexpensive, and there are many good deals being offered by distributors, so it is possible to fine very cheap hot tubs that will provide one with the relief of these physical issues.

Soaking in hot water before bedtime serves to provide one with a restful and deeper sleep.  One aspect is that the soak will alter the body temperature, raising it slightly which is a signal to the brain and the body that it is time for sleep.  The hot water also serves to open the pores and cleanse the skin, and helps to increase circulation and blood flow, which is a key issue when speaking of chronic fatigue.  The very young and the very old are more sensitive to the effects of the hot soaks, and so a doctor should be consulted before these populations take to the hot tubs.  Also, pregnant women should be extremely careful to not soak in water that is too hot.  As well as those affected by diabetes, those with high blood pressure and or heart problems.  Suggestions may be made to the affect of shorter soak times, if at all.  Overall, for those with the previously mentioned conditions, the sense of weightlessness and the soothing warmth of the water will ease ache and pains and provide one with one more tool to prevent sleeplessness and restless nights.

Ramps are the latest hottest menu items being served at Mid-Western cities. They are tender, fresh and local. The attraction might be in the mystery of the Ramp itself. The name itself appears exotic. But, they are nearly as humble like the dandelion greens which are found in close proximity to the Ramp.

Ramps are wild leeks. I have them all over my backyard. I even have them painted on my outdoor kitchen cabinets, for when the Ramp is in flower, it’s a beautiful site. The Ramp is prolific and easy to grow. It’s a bulb and part of the onion and garlic family, related to the lilies. A moist, cook, damp place is required for these bulbs. I found the Mid-Western cities to provide the best zone.

Ramps are milder that an onion, it’s kind of shaped like a scallion and it does taste like a leek, but has a stronger, tangier hint of wild chives. They will appear in early April and flourish during May. They will finish in mid-June if found further north. If you search for wild Ramps, ones not grown in backyards or by local farmers, go to areas where morel mushrooms and fiddlehead ferns can be found. The Ramp peaks at the same time these two plants peak.

When cooking with the Ramps, first trying them in your favorite stew recipe. Next make a custard, a vinaigrette and a ragouts. Puree’ them with potatoes for a spicy, tangy mash. Grill them alongside meat or fish. Serve a relish made of ramps with crayfish, it’s the best. But, my favorite menu item was a Wild Ramp and Golden Potato gnocchi with a sauce of local goat milk ricotta and morel mushrooms.  My mouth just waters with the memory of that dish. Savory, fresh, light and scrumptious.

Tina posted a while ago about a cute advertising site by Next Day Blinds. It’s been on my radar for a while, and I finally checked it out. I really wish I had seen it earlier. They’ve put up videos, magazine ads, radio spots – the works. The T.V. commercials are actually funny, and even more impressive is are the pictures of the blinds, shutters and shades. They look so beautiful! I’m planning on taking a trip to one of the Next Day Blinds showrooms sometime soon. I’d like to get some mini-blinds for my condo that will block out more of the light. Sometimes when I have to work nights, I need to sleep in the morning, but the honeycomb shades I have right now just don’t cut it. I’d be nice to not have to put blankets over my windows just to keep the light out. It’s tacky and cumbersome.

There are many functions for area rugs and many benefits that come along with the purchase. For instance, rugs protect the flooring beneath them. All types of flooring from hardwood to tile to carpet are protected by the rugs.

By having a rug pad under every rug, whether it is a shag rug, bamboo rug or any other types, it will keep the rug from sliding around which will protect you, your family and any guests from tripping. Rug pads are especially necessary for the elderly. Loose rugs are often the reason many older people trip and fall.

In addition to these functions, having outdoor rugs can add space to your home. When an outdoor area such as a patio is decorated and functioning, people are more likely to spend time there which will add another room onto your home. By creating a usable outdoor space with an area rug, you will have the extra space you need when your house is full.

These are just a few of the reasons to get area rugs but the list could go on and on. Besides being easy to clean, they can add to your personal style and make an aesthetic appeal to your senses. And don’t forget about the comfort and warmth they provide your feet!
