Anyone who has been seduced by the idea of a steam shower in their home needs to take steps to protect their shower stall — in fact their entire bathroom — from the damages that steam can cause. They needn’t scrap their dream all together. As long as the following steps are taken, they can still enjoy all the relaxation and health benefits that come with home steam showers .

First off, make sure the shower ceiling is sloped. This will prevent condensation . Next use 6 mil plastic to protect any wood framing in the shower stall or anywhere in the bathroom. Staple over joists and studs and be sure to overlap all plastic edges by at least twelve inches.

Use thinset and mesh tape to seal off all the seams between the backer-board. These are usually concrete panels that are moisture resistance themselves, but the seams are a vulnerable spot that must be protected. Next the entire backer board will need to be covered with a waterproof membrane of polymer or polyethylene.

Now the shower can be tiled and grouted as any other shower. Remember to use an impregnator to seal stone tiles, a process that will need to be repeated every two years. Lastly, seal around all fixtures with o-rings and gaskets. This includes steam and shower heads, values, and digital controls that penetrate the tile.

Once these steps are complete, the bathroom should be safe from steam damage, allowing the home owner to relax and enjoy their new steam shower.
