The Diversity of Kalkata

The people of Kalkata, India have an incredible appreciation of life.  Every aspect of the artistic culture from the preparation of food, to the architecture, to the world of music and theater, even the graffiti is valued and supported and celebrated.   There is a wide variety of options when dining out inKalkata .  The taste of the city is reflected in the variety of the restaurants.  There is something for everyone, from vegetarian to Pizza Hut.  And for those who may not know what they feel like having, there are restaurants throughout the city that offer cuisine from different countries, all under one roof, whether Chinese, Mexican, Italian or French.

Many of the buildings in the city are based on the motifs of the architecture of Rome, or of the Baroque or Gothic time periods.  From the small restaurant to the five star hotel, India has come to refer to the city of Kolkata as a ‘city of palaces’.  Most of the buildings have been regularly maintained and reflect the mixed cultures that have lived there over the years.  This history may be uncovered at the Victoria Memorial, which contains an historical museum documenting the rise of Kolkata .  There are many art museums as well. Two very popular attractions are the Indian Museum and the Academy of Fine Arts.  Regular exhibitions occur during the year, and are attended by many of the locals as well as the tourists.

Theater and music is found throughout the city.  Traditional drama, Jatra, is performed on the streets and in the theaters.  Film is supported, in those going to the movies as well as those making the movies. Tollywood, taken from the name of the district in Kolkata where there are many movies studios, Tollygunj supports a long history of creating very respected films.  The music appreciation is as varied as the number of restaurants.  Traditional Indian music is popular as well as fusion Jazz and modern pop.  And much of the views of the people of Kolkata are reflected on the buildings in the form of graffiti.  Limericks and riddles are painted on the walls, as well as political views and caricatures of the famous members of society.  The cultural diversity and the way that that diversity is embraced in Kolkata makes this city very special.
