Performance in Goa
Visitors to Goa will at once be impressed by the sheer beauty of the region. With beaches and declared biodiversity zones, the natural landscape is a rich source for inspiration and relaxation. The traveler will discover that as for luxury hotels, Goa is also rich. The rooms and their amenities will give pleasant dreams long after the vacation is over. Beyond the physical landscape, there is also a remarkable amount of entertainments available.
There are many festivals held all year, and there are likewise many live performance events that will make the culturally-inclined very happy. India has a long and elaborate history of performance forms, and has contributed to the development of theatre from very early times. Today, visitors can see many forms of plays, both traditionally Indian, as well as traditionally European.
There are two forms of theatre that are distinctive and should be attended, given the chance: Tiatr and Zagor. Tiatr probably comes from the Portuguese word for “theatre” and is a mixture of Italian forms as interpreted by the Portuguese and then developed locally in Goa. So this is a very eclectic mix of styles, but still is very much evocative of traditional Italian forms of comedic theatrical entertainments, and Italian Opera in particular. The development of the form in the past century has lead to a tendency toward emphasizing the music held in between the acts over the theatrical form itself, marking Tiatr as an interesting development in Goa’s cultural life .
Zagor has a longer local history in Goa . Developed primarily as a style of folk theatre, in Zagor, extremely local stories, based in history and stereotype, are presented with intense stylization, and a very open sense of humor . The performers are always all-male, often cross-dressing, and play a variety of comic roles. The situations are typical of tribal village life, and are punctuated with music played on traditional instruments. The performance conventions, where no actor can directly address another onstage, are interesting and often bizarre, but highlight the conventions of this traditional form in parallel to its development in history. Both forms really just begin to scratch the surface of the performances one may find while traveling here.
