One of the most interesting aspects of the island of Ibiza is the people who live there and the personalities associated with it. Abel Matutes Juan is one of the most prominent social figures known on the island. He was born in Ibiza on October 31, 1941 and a political life seemed to be destined for him. His family’s relevance to Ibiza has been compared to the Kennedy family in Boston. Abel Matutes received a degree in both Law and Economics. While tourists visiting the island will not see him club hopping or out and about in the social scene, he does have a tie to it, and has been a major share holder in places like the Space and Privilege, two of the more prominent local spots. Without the contribution and investments of the Matutes family, many of the buildings, land and Ibiza Spain hotels would not be as luxurious as they are today.

Abel Matutes has held many prestigious political positions in his life. It began with his short time as mayor of Ibiza, which lasted from 1970 to 1971. Then, in 1977 he became the Senator for Ibiza and Formentera. In 1982 he left the senate and began his representation of the Balearic Islands in the Spanish Parliament. His career and political involvements continued to grow and he became the Founder Chairman of the Balearic’s Unio Liberal Party. In 1994 he became a member of the European Parliament and is the spokesman for the Partido Popular. He was Spain’s Minister of Foreign affairs from 1996 to 2000. In addition to all of Matutes’ political career, he has been a respected instructor. He has taught Public Finance and is a member of the Economics and Finance Academy. He is Emeritus professor of the Complutense Univeristy of Madrid and also at the University of Santiago de Chile. He has made great contributions to Ibiza’s tourist industry and is currently the Deputy Chairman of the Ibiza and Formentera Tourism Employers Organization. He is also a member of Executive Committee of the Partido Popular.
