Old City of Palma
Palma is the main city and port on the beautiful Balearic Island of Mallorca. Almost half of the population on the island lives in this city and it serves as the traditional summer home of Spanish royalty. Palma is also a major cultural center and attracts huge numbers of tourists who flock to the Balearic Islands each summer. Guests of the city enjoy the luxury accommodations of the 5 star hotels in Palma has and experience the unique flavors of the area in local restaurants.
A sense of history is found in the Old City, a section of Palma in the southeast area near the Cathedral. The maze like structure of the streets shows the influence of Arab designs. The narrow streets amount to little more than walkways through the buildings whose architecture is very similar to that of European cities such as Florence. Many of the houses in this area are private homes though they are frequently open to the public and serve as museums and sometimes galleries. The town hall is also located in the Old City as well as the Banyas Arabs, “Arab Baths.” The baths are no longer functioning and were filled in with dirt and sand many years ago. They remain a popular attraction for tourists who navigate the winding quiet street near the convent of the cathedra to find them. The baths date from the Byzantine period and have not been renovated. This does not deter the many tourists who want to take pictures of the entrance and the external garden.
The Cathedral, known as La Seu, in Old City is a Gothic Masterpiece and one of the most iconic buildings in Palma. The church is huge and can be seen from far off the coast. It took almost 300 years to build, which alludes to its magnificence and stature. The Cathedral has three main entrances and the most spectacular of these is the Portal de Mirador and overlooks the South Palma Bay. Inside there are as many marvels as are scene from the exterior. The internal nave of the church is one of the highest in Europe. The Old City of Parma is an important section to visit and is part of what makes a vacation to Mallorca complete.
