Professional Development Helps Recession Proof Jobs

Effective communication skills are not necessarily a quality great leaders are born with. In fact, most politician says that they learned how to deliver speeches effectively through practice. Many corporate managers say that in addition they learned how to address lower management through the development of leadership skills.

Effective leadership is learned through trial and error and sometimes through professional development. In this recession one of the things that an employee can do to try and make sure that he or she will not get fired is to improve his or her skills. This can be accomplished through more college or through taking professional development courses.

Management development training is one way that you can help recession-proof your job. Though almost all jobs can be downsized, there are ways to help ensure your job is not one of them.

Maps Help Make Traveling Easy

My favorite thing to do is travel and see the world. It seems like I’m always on the go so when I have a chance I take a trip… Which is still on the go, just in a different way. But when I can’t travel, I look through the maps I have from my past trips. I’ve been to some pretty exotic places and I can’t wait to go to more!

I went to Europe a couple of years ago. I pulled out my European map and relived visiting some of the most wonderful places on earth. I loved going to Germany. Though a lot of their history is bad, the culture there is interesting. My Germany map has been used quite a lot.

I’ve also been to China. The Great Wall is breathtaking. It goes on further than your eyes can see and it’s beautifully maintained. My China map has food stains on it and it’s very wrinkled. I think that’s because I got good use out of it on that trip. So, whenever I travel I rely on a map and I end up saving it for memories.

French Open Results

With the French Open quickly coming up, many tennis-enthusiasts are daydreaming about visiting Paris to view this wondrous tournament. I often wish that I could take my racket and play in Paris at the same time as the French Open.  Actually being in Paris when the French Open results are declared and the winner is set in stone would be a wish come true. However I will not be in Paris this spring so I will have to catch the French Open results on the broadcasts of the tournament.

I hope that the rain will hold off until the tournament is over. It really must be a nusance for the compettiors to have it storm while it’s their time to shine. I wonder if many of the results have been scewed because of inclimate weather. I guess there’s no way of knowing for sure so they’ll  just have to take their chances and hope that it stays sunny.

One thing that I don’t miss about my days as an avid tennis player is the physical endurance each player must possess. Not only do they play in set after set, the sun is glaring down on them. while this tournament is the most widely broadcasted tennis tourament, I would much rather watch on my own tv.

Your Risk Increases If Both Parents Have Alzheimer’s

If both your parents have Alzheimer’s disease, you probably are more much likely than other people to get it, researchers said on Monday.

Their study focused on 111 families in which both parents were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia among the elderly, and assessed the risk for developing it among the offspring.

The parents had 297 children who lived into adulthood. Of the 98 men and women who were at least 70 years old, 41 of them — about 42 percent — developed Alzheimer’s disease, researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle found.

“That’s greater than you would expect in the general population in that age group,” Dr. Thomas Bird, one of the researchers, said in a telephone interview.

In the general population, risk for the disease begins to rise at about age 65, with the number of people developing the disease doubling every five years beyond that, experts say.  Read more

Marathon Record Holder Pulls Out Of Olympics Because of Pollution

The marathon world record-holder said yesterday that he was unlikely to compete at the Beijing Olympics because China’s air pollution would damage his health.

The Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie, 34, is a favourite for a gold medal this summer but is likely to focus instead on the 10,000 metres because he suffers from asthma.

“The pollution in China is a threat to my health and it would be difficult for me to run 42km in my current condition,” he said. “But I am not pulling out of the Olympics altogether.”   Read more
